Animal Welfare Body Leiden
The AWB offers advice on how to draw proposals that will be reviewed by the Central Authority for Scientific Procedures on Animals (Centrale Commissie Dierproeven, CCD). The AWB will discuss the design and strategy of your project to fit your scientific goals, and to verify that your project is in accordance with the 3Rs (Reduction, Refinement and Replacement) for responsible science with animals. Additionally, the AWB will advise you on how to apply for a project licence according to the relevant procedures.
Additionally, the AWB Leiden has the following duties:
- Providing advice on issues regarding animal welfare
- Advising on replacement, reduction and refinement of animal experiments
- Ensuring the establishment and review of internal procedures for monitoring, reporting and follow-up with regard to the welfare of the animals
- Following the development and outcome of projects, taking into account the effects on animals used
The AWB is chaired by Nelleke Verhave and may be regarded as the initial contact point for those who have questions concerning research involving laboratory animals, including project applications, housing, food, transportation, anaesthesia and the microbial status of animals.
